Rechargeable Batteries
He claimed that it was costing him a fortune and unless he was going to send us out to work to earn our own money, we all groaned and rolled our eyes at this it was an empty threat that had been used before.
He then went on to say that he was going to buy each of us rechargeable batteries and a charging station that we were to look after. He was also going to buy rechargeable batteries and a charging station for the family entertainment center, which we all used and the mandate was that it was not to be moved from its new home in the rumpus room.
So a few days later he went shopping and bought rechargeable batteries for all of us. George used his rechargeable batteries in his television remote control and his MP3 player. Harry, the youngest, uses the rechargeable batteries in his remote control car. Janice uses the rechargeable batteries in her sing-along toy and Helen, the oldest at 16 uses more batteries than all of us but we don’t know what she uses them for it’s all a bit of a mystery.
Me, well I love taking pictures with my digital camera and that’s where I use my rechargeable batteries the most. There was also a brand new charging station for the entertainment centers rechargeable batteries in the rumpus room as promised and we started planning dancing marathons and Olympic battles with the new rechargeable batteries which meant no limit of how long we could play at any one time because there were two rechargeable batteries.
We thanked our father for the rechargeable batteries and headed off to our respective rooms, which is what we did most nights, to watch television, or play a game, listen to music and sometimes even put our heads down and do some homework.
Over the next few weeks the rechargeable batteries did indeed help us live our lives more economically and our father would smile at the money that he was saving on batteries, that was until the rechargeable batteries and the charging stations started to disappear.
First it was Harry’s rechargeable batteries that disappeared, it took us a few days to notice because at three years old he doesn’t talk as much as the rest of us and tends to get drowned out. We noticed when he sat in front of the television one night and refused to move. He had his remote control car in his hand and was waving at us.
It took us ten minutes for mom who speaks better Harry than the rest of us to decipher what he was saying and then we all trooped up to his room and indeed the rechargeable batteries and the charging station were gone.
It was a mystery, we searched the house and the rechargeable batteries of Harry were nowhere to be found. We all looked at each other suspiciously and mom, sensing some sibling tension labeled everyone else’s rechargeable batteries and charging stations to avoid confusion.
Well the next to disappear was George’s batteries. I heard him screaming in his room which is quite common for George but when it had gone on for over 20 minutes I figured it was more than the usual tantrum and decided to investigate. When I entered his room he was waving his TV remote at the screen but nothing was happening. He turned to me and told me that his remote wasn’t working and he couldn’t change the channels, he wanted to watch cartoons.
I walked over to the set and manually changed the channels, something that had not occurred to George, and took the remote from him to investigate the problem further. His rechargeable batteries were gone and we searched the somewhat messy room and the charging station was gone as well. Perplexed by the mystery we looked at each other and shrugged our shoulders.
Helen burst into the room and started yelling that her rechargeable batteries had gone missing as well and we all ran into my room to see if my rechargeable batteries were still in the charging station. But they weren’t, they were gone. The rechargeable batteries had been there when I left the room but gone when I returned ten minutes later.
Janice was out and her door is always locked so that we couldn’t check whether her rechargeable batteries were still there so we rushed downstairs to see our parents and tell them about the mystery of the rechargeable batteries. They listened to our tale of woe and scratched their heads unable to shed any light on our dilemma.
As a family we went into the rumpus room to see if the entertainment unit rechargeable batteries were still there and that is when we caught the thief in the act of stealing them. We were astounded and amazed and we followed him outside to his kennel.
The culprit was our dog Roger the German Shepherd. He had all the rechargeable batteries and charging stations untouched in a pile in the corner of his kennel for some reason he had taken a liking to them.
